And whoosh, January is over and February is here! Crazy to think that we’ve been in Paris for a whole month already – seems like time has flown by. It’s nice to think that the worst of winter is now behind us and I can start looking forward to spring. I’m definitely ready to stop having to wear all the layers while still feeling cold!
In terms of running, January was the biggest month that I have ever run. I clocked up 392.9km with over 4700m of elevation, in some 36hrs+. That’s insane! No wonder I’m feeling exhausted as well as eating everything in the fridge. Let’s recap what happened this month:
Running a marathon at midnight on NYE/NYD
Definitely up there as one of the maddest marathons I’ve done. It was dark, I wanted to sleep, and with four damned laps to run I nearly went insane. But somehow I held it together and crossed the line. It was certainly a different way to celebrate the new year… but one I don’t think I’ll be repeating anytime soon!
Ultra+Marathon training kicked off
The main reason for all those kilometres is that I started training for my two next major goals: running 4 marathons in 4 weeks under 4 hours (in April) and completing my first ‘proper’ ultra in May, the North Downs Way 50-miler. I’m simultaneously trying to train for speed and distance, which basically means a lot of running and some of it at high speed. It’s been a lot of hard work, and I don’t think I could do it if I still had a full-time job, because…
Becoming a student again
I’m currently in Week 4 of my 12-week intensive French course, and it’s going alright. I’m slowly understanding more and more of what people say, and sometimes will even be able to answer back. Our classes are each afternoon which leaves me lots of time in the morning to run, but I’m realising that I need to be putting in a lot of extra work if I want to improve more rapidly. Like training, you get out what you put in. Language learning is difficult, but it’s definitely worth it.
A new parkrun in my new city
One of my goals for 2018 was to volunteer more often at parkrun, and so far I’ve helped out at Bois de Boulogne parkrun twice, as well as running once. The team there is lovely and even invited me to their second birthday soirée, which made me feel very welcomed and part of the community. I was also lucky enough to take out first female the one time I ran, which feels great! Hopefully it’ll be the place where I can finally go sub-20min.
One year of Carbs and Kilometres!
I started this blog on January 1st 2017, which means that in January it celebrated its first birthday! In it’s second year of existence I’m increasing my frequency of posting to 3x a week, and have also added a newsletter feature. So, what’s on for February?
Good question. Training this month will see the addition of strength work (I’ve finally signed up to a gym) and back-to-back long runs for ultra training. Intervals and tempo runs will get longer, and I’ll be racing another parkrun in a few weeks time. Personally, I’m hoping to do a bit of travel around France, as well as celebrating a lovely Valentines Day with Sye ❤️ Whatever it brings, I’m looking forward to this month.
